Calling All Recruiters HR Folks #truLondon is in Town Again! A quick update from our friend Bill the brand Boorman on his upcoming flagship recruitment unconference #truLondon on 22-23 of February. If you are based anywhere near to London and you do recruitment, HR or simillar, this is a great event to network and share information with industry leaders. There are no less than 40 track leaders lined up, coming from around the globe including South Africa, America and right across Europe. Participants are already booked from 12 countries. There’s plenty of new conversations, livestream, new for 2012 is a live lab that is going to feature a surprise hack to be announced on the day, the #TruGrads, a minimum of 6 case study’s and much more. The deal with an unconference is that you wont have to sit through any dull presentations, in fact PowerPoint is banned completely from the premises. There are no pitches, nobody is flogging their wares (unless you ask them to of course). If you have never attended one of these events youre in for a treat. Bill has also teamed up again with Rob Van Elburg and #RIDE for “The Recruitment Industry Dance Event,” on the 22nd (its unclear whether there are any dance track leaders). 5 Ways You Can Put Financial Wellbeing on the Workplace Agenda No longer considered just a ‘nice to have’, business leaders are embracing the concept of employee wellness in pursuit of  higher levels of productivity, staff retention and increased profits. However, while physical and mental wellbeing is starting to become a key business focus, financial wellness should also be a priority. Money worries are costing the  UK economy £121 billion  in lost productivity every year and escalating existing mental health problems amongst employees. So heres some  advice on how businesses can get ahead of the curve when it comes to tackling employee financial stress 1. Breaking down barriers According to  research by Barclays, almost half of employees are worried about their personal finances and 80 percent are not satisfied with the level of support on offer. This suggests employees would like support to disclose their financial concerns, but experience barriers due to a lack of information from their workplaces. A strong social network will encourage open lines of communication. Try promoting weekly coffee meetings between less familiar co-workers, assigning a ‘financial health champion’ to raise awareness across your organization and holding regular group financial education sessions to discuss anonymous questions or concerns about personal finances. 2. Financially-focused employee benefits Financial wellness is influenced by a variety of factors including life stage, gender, marital status, and salary.  Research shows 89 percent  of those just starting out in their careers (aged 18-24) experience more ‘real-time’ financial difficulties, often caused by university debt and lower incomes. This contrasts with employees in their late 40s who are more likely to worry about their future financial position after retirement. Many companies offer financially-focused employee benefits, like Income Protection, Critical Illness and Life Insurance, which provide a financial safety net should a worker encounter the unexpected. These should be considered the foundations in financial benefits for employees. Beyond this, some organizations meet diverse needs of today’s workforce by providing an additional tailored suite of benefits, enabling staff to take advantage of those that make sense for them. Subsidised memberships, annual leave buy-back schemes, and childcare vouchers can offer real-time financial assistance. Pairing these with benefits that provide long-term financial protection, like workplace savings schemes and life insurance, can offer a great balance and cater for different demographics equally, to help employees’ financial security. 3. Fintech to the rescue The UK Fintech industry, now  worth over £7 billion, is world-leading and more employers are taking advantage of the expertise on offer to address financial stress amongst their employees. For example, Moola an online investing and savings service is helping businesses integrate their business platform into existing employee benefit portals and providing employees with access to expert mentors to help them achieve their financial goals. There are a host of personal budgeting apps on offer too, such as Mint, Level Money, and Pennies, which offer real-time visual spending data, timely reminders for bills and instant notifications if you over-spend. They’re simple to use and raising awareness of such options across your business, can help make staff are aware of what’s available universally and establish the habit of tracking personal finances. 4. Workplace saving schemes Businesses leaders need to proactively encourage employees to invest in their own financial security. There are a number of tax-efficient employer-led workplace saving schemes available beyond just a pension scheme â€" from Workplace ISAs, Save As You Earn schemes to Share Incentive Plans.  Smarterly  is a workplace savings tool that offers a simple way for employees to start investing. The  Money Advice Service  website offers detailed advice for employers and employees, including how to diversify investment portfolios to minimise risk and maximise savings. Whilst workplace savings schemes won’t be right for everyone, make sure to educate your employees in a group talk about what’s on offer and how they can find out more. 5. Bring in the experts In 2016,  only 15 percent of employers  had a financial education programme in place. Engaging employees in complex conversations about financial health can be difficult, so a careful approach is needed. Inviting in a financial expert to deliver a group seminar or one-to-ones can give your employees a good understanding of the best ways forward. If a physical visit isn’t possible, most third-party providers can offer online education formats such as webinars, animations and interactive games. Businesses can also introduce Employee Assistance Programmes (EAPs) for those who may need more advanced support.  EAPs offer direct, confidential contact with experts who can support individuals with areas causing emotional distress including money troubles, and are often available through Group Income Protection plans. To achieve employee total wellbeing, employers must help address the financial insecurity issue facing the UK working population. Whether an employee is already experiencing financial difficulties, it’s important to cast your benefits net wide with a range of both proactive and reactive options so support is available for all. 6 Must-Haves on Your Employees Workplace Wishlist Motivating your staff can often be one of the hardest things to do â€" unless you throw cash at them to work better but then there is a risk of employee-fatigue. Well a recent survey by the workplace consultants at Peldon Rose saw a fifth of workers admit that their office environment actually hinders their professional productivity, while over half of job hunters say they would actually turn down a position if they didn’t like the workspace so it’s clear that British workers place a lot of value in where they spend their working week. So what is your employees’ workplace wish list? 1. More natural light Workers without windows reported poorer scores than their counterparts on quality of life measures related to physical problems and vitality, as well as poorer outcomes on measures of overall sleep quality and sleep disturbances. The study was reported in the Journal of  Clinical Sleep Medicine.  Co-lead author Mohamed Boubekri, is an associate professor of architecture at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, said: Workers are a group at risk because they are typically indoors often without access to natural or even artificial bright light for the entire day. The study results confirm that light during the natural daylight hours has powerful effects on health. Architects need to be aware of the importance of natural light not only in terms of their potential energy savings but also in terms of affecting occupants’ health. A simple design solution to augment daylight penetration in office buildings would be to make sure the workstations are within 20 to 25 feet of the peripheral walls containing the windows. Daylight from side windows almost vanishes after 20 to 25 feet from the windows. 2. Better lunch/break area No break room is complete without an area for your employees to actually take a break. Lunch tables are important for the obvious reasons: they give people space to sit down and eat a meal during their lunch breaks. But they also serve a more important purpose they create a natural opportunity for your workers to engage with one another. Those conversations can help to solve existing problems facing thoseworkers, or promote interpersonal connections and a greater sense of teamwork. Dont make your break room a simple extension of the rest of your office. Do something to make it stand out. For example, you could change the color of the walls or the layout of the room to make the break room feel like its a part of a different building. The change in environment will give them a chance to relax and embrace the change in scenery. When they return to work, theyll start fresh, and productivity will substantially increase. The break room should be a lively, stimulating place. Dont keep white walls with a single poster describing workers legal rights. Instead, paint the break room a unique colour or feature an idiosyncratic pattern. You can also decorate your tables and walls with various items, from motivational posters to community-based bulletin boards. Whatever you do, its important to make the break room an interesting place. Otherwise, it will feel like a part of the office, and your workers wont feel relaxed. Try not to over think it either just create an interesting environment that stands out from the rest of the office. 3. More personalised workspace There are some very easy steps which can be taken that could impact on how an employee feels about their workspace and atmosphere in particular plays a significant part. A survey found that 22% of office workers were calling for the power to personalise their work station. 4. Better amenities Amenities are also on the agenda when it comes to improving UK offices, with those surveyed revealing that access to an office coffee machine and water cooler would introduce a welcome perk to where they work. 5. Better office furniture Small, strategic changes could mean big improvements for working environments across the UK as some Brits lay blame on less than luxurious office furniture and uninspiring workplace decor. With many office workers spending upwards of eight hours a day in their office chair, it’s no surprise that 18% of respondents would like to trade in their furniture for more comfortable and ergonomic alternatives while 16% would welcome more colourful or engaging office design. 6. Introduction of colour or art on walls Dr Craig Knight, who has studied the psychology of working environments for 12 years at the University of Exeter, where he heads a research group called Identity Realisation (IDR). He says: There is a real tendency to opt for sanitised, lean workspaces, designed to encourage staff to just get on with their work and avoid distraction. If you enrich a space people feel much happier and work better; a very good way of doing this is by using art. It doesnt have to be expensive art but something that is eye-catching and makes your employees happy to work there.  Alex Heath, is the managing director at International Art Consultants, which advises workplaces on art. He says: Art is a way of retaining staff and encouraging them to be in the office, at a time when people increasingly want to work remotely. Some companies consciously use art as part of their retention strategy. Aesthetic in the truest sense means energy-giving which is what a workplace needs, rather than a bland, industrial environment which can be more like giving workers a dose of anaesthetic.

The scary truth about being an entrepreneur When it comes to entrepreneurs, there’s a strong reporting bias. All day long we hear about the entrepreneurs who made it: Alan Sugar, Mark Zuckerberg, Jen-Hsun Huang. But they’re just the tip of the iceberg. As with so many other things in life, there’s a long tail to the distribution where the majority of entrepreneurs wind up. You might think that becoming an entrepreneur puts you on the road to riches, but unless you’re both lucky and have a great idea, you’ll probably go broke. With that said, entrepreneurship is fun. Very few days are a drag, especially when you’re doing business. And as an entrepreneur, the skys the limit. You can aspire to be as great as you want to be. There really are very few limits to where your success can take you. Here are some scary truths about becoming an entrepreneur. You Might Not Be The Highest Paid Entrepreneurs imagine that because they’re at the top of an organization, they’ll be the highest paid. But this isn’t usually how things work out in practice. Sure, the leaders of established companies often bring home the biggest paychecks, but that’s because they’ve already done the hard work, building up their empires. Because money is so limited as you start out your business, you’ll have to invest most of it into hiring the right people. And to get the right people, you’ll have to pay them high wages which are sometimes higher than your own. You Aren’t The Boss Here’s another shocking home truth: you’re not the boss. When you run your own startup business, this is one of the first lessons you learn. First off, the customers are the boss. What they want is what goes, no matter how much you’d like them to pay you regardless. And second, you’re not even the boss of your employees. To keep people at a startup, you have to constantly listen to their needs as well as their advice. You also have to give people responsibility to do things like negotiate deals and make their own decisions. People Won’t Like You Entrepreneurs tend to be an outward-focusing, gregarious bunch. But that doesn’t mean that people will always like you. There’s a risk, according to Ellis Whittam, that an employee or customers will sue you for damages at some point. But it’s important to know that as a business leader, this is all par for the course. In business, people will sue. The trick is to make sure that you protect yourself by covering all bases. Never dismiss an employee without providing a reason. Never sell a faulty product. And never tell anybody your IP. Work-Life Balance Is Impossible As an entrepreneur, work-life balance is a mirage. Work will become your life and will take over your regular free time, especially in the evenings and on the weekend. Don’t be surprised if you wind up going without a holiday for a year straight, working most weekends. It’s scary, but it’s all part of life as a business leader.
